Renovation history

Sal Gorda

In September 2019 we took over the tapas restaurant Sal Gorda on the Van Breestraat 107A. After three months of project work together with our designer Edward Slaviero, architect Wouter Dierdorp and contractor Leo van Witsen we finally started demolition in January 2020.

During the refurbishing period we have discovered interesting facts about this 100 years old building. Around 60 years ago, there used to be a liquor store with living space upstairs and its wine cellar downstairs. We have put a wine concept in a place which was already designed for that.

Mozaiek illustration

We have demolished the space in totality with the exception of the tile wall on the upper floor, a Spanish Mozaiek illustration of the winemaking process with the title EL VINO. At the entrance we discovered that the ceiling was actually 80 cm higher but could not be seen due to the bows created by the previous owner to give a Spanish feeling to the tapas bar.

Major interventions were made such as cutting the floor and creating stairways in order to create accessibility to the kitchen from upstairs as well. The access to the kitchen was only possible through the souterrain. The floor and the ceiling were completely renewed.

Delay construction process

Because of the pandemics and the lockdown that came two months later in March 2020, the process of the construction was slowed down but we did not give up. The construction took six months and we are proud of the results. The goal for the interior was to reflect and up-bring the qualities of the neighborhood: luxurious yet welcoming, industrial yet warm.

A sensorial experience from the tactility of the interior to the high quality of the wines and food.
